Pet Spay & Neuter Services in North Hollywood

Do Your Part as a Responsible Pet Owner

Spaying and neutering refer to the sterilization, or “fixing” of female and male pets, respectively, and these procedures can safeguard their health and improve their quality of life. Our veterinarians and staff at Sweet Home Veterinary Hospital recommend spay and neuter procedures for most of our patients. This responsible act does more than just prevent the possibility of your pet having a litter of puppies or kittens you don’t want, but it also helps curtail a variety of behavioral and medical issues. Our staff is well-trained to provide exceptional pain management and at-home instructions for when you take your pet home after their surgery so the process is as easy and painless as it can be for your pet.

Why Should I Spay or Neuter My Pet?

Part of being a responsible pet parent is getting your pet fixed as early as 8 weeks of age. Spaying and neutering are both common, safe, and effective veterinary surgeries. Recovery is typically quick and easy. Not to mention, you will do your part to ensure your pet cannot breed and thus further contribute to the rampant problem of pet overpopulation.

Spaying or neutering your pet can prevent:

  • Reproductive cancers, particularly mammary cancer in females and testicular cancer in males
  • Tumors, such as prostate tumors in male pets
  • Endocrine disorders such as diabetes
  • Troublesome behaviors like aggression, urine marking, or howling
  • Limits the pet overpopulation problem

What to Expect After Surgery

After your pet's spay or neuter surgery, expect a period of postoperative care to ensure a smooth recovery. Your pet may initially feel groggy due to anesthesia, and it's crucial to keep them in a quiet, comfortable space as they wake up. There might be behavioral changes, such as reduced activity levels or appetite, which usually normalize within a day or two.

The incision site will require attention—keep it clean, monitor for any signs of infection, and avoid your pet licking the area excessively. It's common for pets to experience limited activity for a short period, and your veterinarian may recommend restrictions.

Follow any postoperative care instructions diligently, and schedule a follow-up appointment if necessary to ensure your pet heals properly and transitions back to their normal routine.
